Are there such things as sleep problems in Children?

Yes, including nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking and sleep talking are common.
Narcolepsy is rare sleep disorder commonly seen during adolescence. This type of sleep
disorder needs referral for proper evaluation and management.

 

How can the Dentist help sleep disorders?

We help snoring, which is a loud breathing noise from vibrations of the soft palate.
Conditions such as asthma, allergies, and cigarette smoke in the environment are reported to
increase the risk of snoring in children, as they induce irritation of the upper respiratory tract.
We evaluate their airways including adenoids, tonsils and open or closed-bite skeletal problems,
bruxism, tongue tie(we will do a SIMPLE LASER procedure) will also effect the child’s jaw
development.

What is the significance of not having a sleep disorder treated?

In children, study after studty shows those children who snore and who go on to develop
sleep apnea will eventually develop behavior disturbances such as restlessness, aggressive behavior, excessive daytime sleepiness, school problems. Habitual snoring is
defined as snoring frequently or always snoring “always” is significantly associated with poor
academic performance in mathematics, science, and spelling.

The same problems occur with adults and prolong untreated problems will link to decreasing life span from 8-10 years, diabetes, Alzheimers, atrial fibrillation (irregular heart
beat), lack of energy which leads to overweight, depression. A neck diameter of larger than
17” for males and 16” for female usually indicates that they have sleep disorders, apnea or
snoring.

How do we screen for sleep disorder?

From your health questionnaires, we use Rhinometer and Pharyngometer, Watch Pat 100
(Home sleep study) or PSS at the hospital. Doctor Ong will recommend appropriate
treatments that are best for you and compliance. For CPAP users who are intolerant to it, we
have alternative methods using FULL BREATH mouth appliance, uniquely designed and patented by FULL BREATH Inc, which will open up your airway, at the same time also reposition your
tongue forward. Unlike other appliances, this is one piece, smaller, easy to take with you to
travel, and has been approved by FDA. This mouthpiece can be compared to a sports
mouthpiece, allowing the patient to breathe through either the nose or mouth.

This is an inexpensive non surgical approach when a person has SLEEP APNEA, before
other methods are administered. When a person snores, his lack of deep continuous sleep
causes him her to be fatigue during the waking hours; we will also monitor your results with
post op test and screening.

Does my medical insurance pay?

Some will, and some don’t. We will assist you to bill your insurance and MediCare. Our staff
